Another recent project in Oregon City, Oregon gave us the opportunity to showcase our full-scope approach to exterior home painting and siding repair. This home received not only a full repaint using premium materials but also essential siding upgrades—resulting in a beautiful, durable exterior that will perform for years to come.

Identifying and Repairing Dry Rot Damage

During our initial prep, we discovered significant dry rot along the front elevation of the home, hidden beneath the original cedar shake siding. Dry rot is a common issue in the Pacific Northwest due to prolonged moisture exposure and improper flashing, failing windows or trim, failing caulking—but it’s something Premier Painting LLC is well-equipped to handle.

Here’s how we addressed it:

  • Removed all rotted cedar shake and trim

  • Installed ice and water shield and Typar house wrap to seal and protect the home’s structure

  • Replaced siding with Hardie Shingles and Hardie Plank Trim, both known for their long-lasting durability and resistance to rot, pests, and warping

  • Flashed the belly band trim before siding installation to ensure proper water drainage

  • Replaced one fascia board with pre-primed cedar to match the existing profile

  • All cut ends were carefully primed, a crucial step to prevent moisture intrusion and ensure longevity

These repairs not only restored the structural integrity of the home but also improved its ability to resist the elements in the years ahead.

Proper Prep: The Foundation of Every Quality Paint Job

As with every project, we began with thorough surface preparation—a key step that ensures longevity and a flawless finish.

  • Pressure Washing: The entire exterior was pressure washed to remove dirt, mildew, and loose debris.

  • Paint Scraping: Any areas with peeling or flaking paint were scraped down to a sound surface.

  • Priming: All exposed wood surfaces were primed with Cover-Stain Oil-Based Primer to ensure strong adhesion and consistent paint coverage.

  • Caulking: We sealed all joints, gaps, and seams using OSI and Vulkem 116 caulking, depending on the material and exposure. This step is essential for moisture protection and to prevent drafts.

With all surfaces properly prepped and repaired, we applied a high-performance finish using Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Paint:

  • Paint Product: Sherwin-Williams Duration – known for its mildew resistance, UV protection, and long-lasting color retention

  • Application Method:

    • Siding: Sprayed with two coats of even coverage for a flawless finish

    • Trim: Carefully brush and rolled for precision and clean lines

This combination ensures excellent coverage and a professional look that enhances curb appeal and withstands Oregon’s changing seasons.
